During the 18th century the Dutch-Chinese tea trade was growing and the port of Cape Town, South Africa was an important stop along the long trade route between Europe and Asia where tea drinking also flourished. Outside of the township farming communities sprang up however for these Dutch settlers tea was hard to come by and expensive so in 1772 a Swedish botanist, Carl Thunberg, noted that the indigenous people were harvesting, drying and brewing a drink using the leaves of the wild rooibos plant.ant.
